Business Cycle Investing: The Outlook for UK Equities

Julie Dean will discuss the outlook for UK Equities using Cazenove Capital's business cycle approach and show how this investment view is reflected in the Cazenove UK Equity Fund.
She will talk about what stage of the business cycle we are in and what the various survey and macro economic data indicate about where we are going. Julie will then look at what asset prices might be telling us about the future - looking at both the behaviour of different types of stocks and at equity/bond valuations. Finally she will look at how the UK Equity fund is structured and what the strongest stocks/sector views are.

Julie Dean, AAA rated by Citywire*, joined Cazenove in 2002. She is a member of the Pan-European equity team and manager of the Cazenove UK Opportunities Fund, the Cazenove UK Dynamic Fund and co-manager of the Cazenove UK Equity Fund. Prior to HSBC, she was a UK equity fund manager for Invesco GT. Julie graduated from St Anne’s College, Oxford University with a BA (Hons) in Modern History. Biography

Errol Francis is a specialist UK equity fund manager with 21 years investment experience. He is manager of Schroder ISF* UK Equity and also works closely with Richard Buxton (Head of UK equities) on the Schroder UK Alpha Plus Fund.
Errol's investment career began in 1993 as an analyst, and subsequently fund manager in the UK Equity team, at Baring Asset Management. He then moved to Credit Suisse as a UK equity fund manager before joining Schroders in January 2007.
Errol is a member of the Institute of Investment Management and Research.

James graduated from Bristol University in 1994 with a BSc in Politics. After a year of military service he joined Newton working in the Private Investment Management department as a portfolio manager. During this time he was responsible for a wide range of clients and managed the Newton Falcon Fund. In 2004 James moved to Veritas Asset Management to establish and manage a global income fund as well as managing a range of other clients portfolios. He rejoined Newton in 2005 as a global equity manager. James gained a Masters Degree in Finance from the London Business School in 2004.

Kevin Lilley joined RLAM in 2001 and manages solely the Royal London European Growth Fund. His consistent performance is generated through his contrarian philosophy, high conviction ideas and his distinctive investment approach. Kevin has a broad base of equity management experience. From 1989-1994 Kevin was Assistant Investment Manager for Lincolnshire County Council. For the next five years he held the post of Director of European Equities at NPI, moving to TT International as a Portfolio Manager in 1999. Kevin obtained qualifications in Business Studies and Accounting from North Lincolnshire College and Clarendon College, Nottingham. He is a member of the Securities Institute having passed the Securities Industry Diploma and completed the London Business School Accelerated Development Programme.

Shawn joined the investment industry in 1994.
Main responsibilities
Fund management of any and all convertibles based funds at Aviva Investors.
Experience and qualifications
Shawn joined Aviva Investors in July 2001 and joined Aviva Investors Global Convertible Bond team in June 2004.
Previously he was responsible for the analysis of the US technology sector. Prior to joining Aviva Investors, he worked at Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein as an Equity Research Associate where he covered US technology companies with an emphasis on software.
Before this Shawn worked at Deloitte and Touche LLP as a financial consultant and Nomura Securities as a US Government Bond Trader. Shawn holds a BSc in Business and Finance from the University of New Hampshire and an MBA in Finance with Honours from Fordham University in New York.
He is a Chartered Financial Analyst, a member of the CFA Institute and a member of the Boston Securities Analyst Society.
